Let's get started
Andrew Crosson
Issue date: 2/3/10 Section: Opinion
Let me go ahead and apologize. The last thing the Crimson needs is another opinion column. Hey there, Mr. Pot. My name's Mr. Kettle, but you can call me Black.
You're used to a few common themes in this section. First, you can typically expect a piece from the super-right-wing conservative Christian who thinks we should abolish the Easter bunny and make sure we pray enough. Then, of course, there's the typical left-wing liberal bit trying to draw attention to how amazing Obama is and what's coming up next on his teleprompter. Sometimes you might even get an article that's so intelligent and complicated that no one really understands it.
Have you noticed what's missing from the Opinion section, though? Anything that actually causes you to think and to question. Anything that actually hits close to home. That's where my column comes in. Someone at the Crimson thought it would be a good idea to give me this little paper soap box to stand on.
Some of you won't agree with my opinions. That's quite fine with me - we definitely don't all need to think like I do - trust me on that one. Others of you might even get your feathers ruffled a time or two by what I write. Again - that's okay with me. Perhaps it's even one of the reasons I'm writing (though I never intend to offend).
Have you ever noticed that there's complacency or a lack of gusto, a certain 'umph,' on this campus? As if no one is brave enough to say what they really feel because they're worried about what others will think or upsetting the status quo? I think SamfordSecret proved that.
You're wondering what exactly I'm going to write about. During a midnight brainstorm I had a few weeks ago, I came up with a long list of things around here that no one really wants to touch with a 10-foot pole.
I'm going to talk about things like the alcohol problem at Samford that the administration wishes would just go away. Things like the Greek vs. Independent rift that no one wants to admit is really present. Things like the SGA, Samford athletics and why students don't attend, and even little nitpicky things like the ridiculously tacky and completely out of place giant white statue outside the bookstore. And much, much more.

First of all, for the sake of accuracy, it was Santa Claus that I wanted to abolish...not the Easter Bunny.
:-)
Secondly, I look forward to reading your columns. (Continued…)

This is where you column comes in? So previous topics written by Crimson writers such as the need to look at the racial disparity at Samford, the need to reform the Alabama Constitution, "Going Green Initiatives", the healthcare reform have been pointless then. (Continued…)

While I echo Sir Moss in welcoming you to the staff here at the Crimson, I cannot do so with the same level of respect that he gave.
In all honesty, I was offended at your article. (Continued…)

I don't really appreciate the Black comment. Racism is no laughing matter.

Well, it seems my cohorts have jumped the gun on me. Please look forward to my own scathing addition to this body of rebuke. It will be published next week. (Continued…)

Wow, you columnists are mad. It makes for fun reading.
Before you bury Andrew for his belittling of you, you need to understand from where he comes. (Continued…)

While I won't go into his word choice or phrasing or anything (I'm not an English or JMC major for a reason), I for one am glad Andrew wants to write a column dealing with issues more unique to our microcosm. (Continued…)

I love it andrew.
I'm excited to read an article in a "Samford" paper that actually deals with "Samford" issues- which will finally spark necessary conversation among the Samford community. (Continued…)
