What to wear in winter

It's a constant battle during these winter months. Every morning, I wake up and turn on the Weather Channel, only to find out that it is going to be another day with a high temperature in the 40s.
Being the cold natured person that I am, the first thought that comes to mind when I head to my closet is layering myself in tons of clothes in order to stay warm. However, I do not particularly want to look like the Michelin Man in all of my layers. Well, thanks to style professionals, it is possible to look cute and stay warm.
Scarves are one of the best accessories ever created. Not only are they stylish, but they provide tons of warmth. Unfortunately, I feel like I have tried all the knots, ties and concoctions that give flair to wearing a scarf. I just want my scarf to cooperate!
Thankfully, someone came up with a cowl, which is basically a scarf that has no end and is like a giant necklace that keeps you really warm. In a word, they are brilliant and you can find some really great designs at etsy.com.
Then there are leggings. Are they pants or are they tights? To put an end to this long running debate on Samford's campus, leggings can serve both purposes if and only if worn properly.
Obviously, leggings are not equivalent to jeans (no pockets or belt loops) and should only be worn with shirts that provide proper coverage (girls, you know what I mean). Overall, the rule for wearing leggings is that they need to be paired with something as long as a tunic.
To get a better idea of what I mean, let me give you some styling tips. Leggings are a great alternative for tights during this cold season and look great paired with a skirt or dress and a cute pair of leather boots. Another great look is pairing leggings with an oversized sweater, something that you can come across in any thrift store, thus giving your look a vintage flair.
Another important aspect of any winter outfit is the jacket. Yes, there are North Face jackets. Yes, they are popular- but that does not make them cute. Instead of the popular fleece, go for a wool pea coat with gold buttons and strong shoulders to achieve the military look, a very popular style for this upcoming season. Or, try a leather jacket adorned with a fold-over collar and asymmetrical zippers to get that biker chic look.
Cold feet? No worries, that problem is easily fixed with a great pair of boots. Luckily, a pair of leather or suede boots will last you a couple of seasons, so don't be afraid to think about them as an investment.
When it comes to boots, keep it simple with a buckle or ring and strap detail at the ankle and pull tabs at the top. When it comes to what height the boot should be, it is completely depends on what they will be worn with.
Booties (short ankle boots) look best worn with tights, whereas calf or knee high boots look best with skinny jeans tucked into them.
Already have a great pair of simple boots for this weather? Then grab some leather ankle boots with a lace up closure or assorted crystals and studs to give your look some extra flare.
Now you know, cold weather can be tackled. In style.
