After class, Strickland and senior Ferrell Armstrong frequently stopped for lunch at Soda los Mangos, a hamburger place with, "the best hamburgers ever," Strickland said.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays the students took part in service projects. With images of painting and building homes as a way of giving back, Strickland was surprised when he was told they would instead be writing a type of pitch for tourists. What the students wrote would be posted on various websites to better inform tourists of the culture and livelihood of Costa Ricans. Each writing sample was to be written in Spanish, as well as English, and presented to the Mayor of Santa Ana.
"It was a different way of giving back," Strickland said, "but it gave us, the tourists and even the people of Costa Rica a new perspective of what's going on in different areas around them."
Similar to Salmon and his classmates in London, the Spanish students also had weekends off from school. Spending his weekends relaxing at La Playa de Jaco (Jaco Beach), deep sea fishing in the Pacific or zip lining through the rainforest, Strickland certainly made the best of his time over Jan Term.
After weeks of eating, sleeping and studying miles away from Samford's campus, both Salmon and Strickland look back on their experiences with gratitude, insight to the vastness of our world and a yearning to encourage others to study abroad.
