"It was moments like last season that made me look into coaching football full time," Shade said. "A part of me was saying that I want to do this for real instead of being a volunteer. I feel like the coaching staff here, from Pat Sullivan to Bill Clayton and everybody else, will teach me a lot.
"There are some things I might bring to the table with NFL experience, but this is a great staff on its own. I'm honored to have the opportunity to work with them," he said.
Shade met with the football team on Tuesday afternoon for a formal introduction. Team members said they are excited to get the season started and rolling. Even though some players will not be in town for summer workouts, strength and conditioning coach Paul Hogan said he expects everyone to keep up.
"Our workouts will be the same for the most part," redshirt freshman and political science major Riley Barnacastle said. "However, being on campus gives the team an opportunity to really come together and build camaraderie, so we're trying to motivate people to stay and workout over the summer."
Workouts will start in the beginning of the first summer semester and go through the first week of fall classes.
"Coach Hogan has given us workouts for over the summer, even if someone is not going to be at Samford," freshman history and social science major Chase Inman said. "We'll have afternoon workouts with lifting about three times a week, and then do speed drills for the other two days. For the people who won't be there over the summer, we're hoping that they can find a place to work out on their own and stay dedicated to the program. It would be great to start the season with everyone in the best shape possible."
