The brothers of Sigma Chi walked it out on stage clad in tunics and biblical headdresses with their show, “The Original Fraternity.” The audience laughed as the brothers portrayed the twelve disciples dancing to Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take the Wheel” and Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks.” Sigma Chi was also awarded the judges’ choice and participants’ choice for Best Music.
“The hardest part was that a lot of guys didn’t think we could compete seriously,” director Matt Mogle, junior business major, said. “Convincing the guys that we could do this if we worked, it was difficult. Keeping the attention of 50 guys isn’t easy. When the guys figured out that we could do well, they began to listen.”
Dudes-A-Plenty snagged first runner-up this year with their show, “Magic.” The show followed the story of a magician whose tricks kept failing as he tried to win the love of a girl. His attempted magic tricks included sawing a person in half, making Harry Potter fly during Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up” and making the group disappear with some help from the movie “The Prestige.”
“We always pick topics for themes that little boys like,” director Jay Lasater, senior English major, said. “Magic was a good theme to follow Monsters and Robots.”
Phi Mu took home second runner-up for, “Se7en.” Though named like the Brad Pitt movie, this show was family-friendly. The sisters portrayed the seven deadly sins with songs including Britney Spears’ “Gimme More,” David Gray’s “Slow Motion” and “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “Eat It.” Phi Mu also won the judges’ award for excellence in theme and the participants’ choice awards for Best Overall and Best Choreography.
“We got to display so many types of different personalities, we got to be prideful, flirty and mad,” director Maegan Wilson, senior journalism and mass communication major, said. “It made it so much more fun to perform.”
Members of Alpha Omicron Pi won the community service competition portion of Step Sing, raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The sisters of Alpha Delta Pi won the judges’ award for excellence in choreography and the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi won the participants’ choice for Best Costume.
For the next year, the brothers of Sigma Chi will hold the title of Sweepstakes winner.
“I was in shock,” Mogle said. “I thought we weren’t going to get it like last year. When Dudes got second we thought we might have a chance. For me, it was relief that the time we put into the show was worth it. Not many guys expected to win sweepstakes.”
